Savory Pie
with Faith Kramer

Hear how Faith Kramer, author of 52 Shabbats: Friday Night Dinners Inspired by a Global Jewish Kitchen and Bay area freelance writer and recipe developer, overcame her fear of filo and became an enthusiastic proponent of all things filo, especially savory baked goods. She will demonstrate her Spinach Dill Pie, her oversized take on of the individual Sephardic Jewish pastries known as a boreka and delve into some of the history of this thin, flaky dough. She will also be talking about her book, the global nature of Jewish food and food ways. Faith Kramer, who will show us her Spinach Dill Pie wrapped in Filo dough. faithkramer.com

Bonus! Omnivore Books will be on-site selling books!

Faith Kramer is a food writer and recipe developer concentrating on the food ways, history, and customs of the Jewish diaspora. She develops recipes and writes about Jewish customs and food as well as travel and global ingredients.

She is the author of 52 Shabbats: Friday Night Dinners Inspired by a Global Jewish Kitchen (The Collective Book Studio) with more than 90 classic and modern, seasonal recipes for the Shabbat, holiday or dinner table inspired by Jewish communities around the world. The book explores fundamentals of Jewish cooking as well as offering essays on international Jewish communities, food ways, ingredients, and traditions.

As a columnist for j., the Jewish News of Northern California, she writes articles on food and cooking along with original recipes. Faith has a blog that chronicles her early exploration of international and Jewish food and a new website (faithkramer.com) with links to her recipes and other writing and is starting a newsletter exploring global ingredients, worldwide Jewish food, her travels, and more in 2023.

Faith has taught cooking classes on food from around the world, presented programs on Jewish customs, celebrations, and holidays, and led food-related walking tours that explore the economic, geographic, and political underpinnings of the food as well as how to use international ingredients in other contexts.

When not out traveling, and eating, her way around the world, she lives with her husband in Oakland, CA, where he does all the dishes and makes sure leftovers are promptly eaten.
